DAY EXCURSION TO KANDY

 

Pick up from Beach Hotel (Negombo, Colombo or Bentota ) and proceed to Kandy – the Hill Capital. En route, visit the Elephant Orphanage at Pinnawela a conservation breeding centre where you can see the largest herd of more than 65 captive Elephants comprising animal’s ages on the world, established primarily with objective we of providing a home to motherless babies found stranded in the jungle as a result of “development”. The babies are being fed by bottle thrice a day which times attracts large number of visitors of both local and foreign.

 

The Royal Botanical Gardens which is considered as the best of its kind at the this part of the world bit more than 5000 species of flora which has with in its precincts the residence of Lord Louise Mount Batten – Supreme  Commander of Allied Forces during world war!!

 

In Kandy, undertake a City Tour visiting the Temple of the Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha – a UNESCO declared world heritage site – venerated by Buddhists world over which is now housed in part of the place of the last king of Sri Lanka before falling to the British in 1815 AD. Overlooking the picturesque Kandy Lake the Upper lake drive – only place in Kandy where you can have a Bird’s Eye view of the entire city.

 

Visit to Gem Museum to get an idea of how this valuable item reaches the market in the world.

DAY EXCURSION TO SIGIRIYA/ DAMBULLA

Pick up from the Beach Hotel (Negombo, Colombo or Bentota) and proceed to Sigiriya cutting across the west to the dry zone.

 

In Sigiriya, walk through the amazing “Fountain Garden” which comes alive even at present during heavy rains having crossed the moat and the huge ramparts and the “Boulder Garden” , on numerous stairways to this magnificent monument which was a Royal Citadel for 18 years in the 5th Century AD, built by King Kasyapa on the lines of “Alakamanda” – the celestial palace of  “God Kuvera”  - the God of wealth to see the remains of the magnificent palace spread over a few hectares of  land , 600 feet above ground level having admired the beauty of world famous “ Sigiriya Frescoes” – 21 remaining out of a few hundreds which covered part of the western rock face in ancient time – the oldest examples of figure paintings in Sri Lanka which are considered to be similar to the contemporary painting of the caves in Ajantha and Ellora in India, the graffiti on the mirror like glazed surface “Mirror Wall” – which was used to inscribe the observations of the viwers in verses, passing through the frontal portion of a colossal seated Lion which gives the name- Lion Rock – Sinha + Giri

 

The UNESCO has recognized the importance of this monument and quite correctly declared it as a World Heritage Site. This is also widely considered as the 8th Wonder of the modern world.

 

In the afternoon, visit Dambulla, another World Heritage Site comprising of 5 caves of different dimensions which have been the hiding places of King Valagambahu during the 1st Century BC converted in to a Temple. The caves are full of massive wall and ceiling paintings and 154 sculptures of Loard Buddha, Kings Deities, unique among which is a 47 recumbent statue of Lord Buddha. The paintings are considered to be depicting the previous lives of Lord Buddha while the figures are made of wood, clay and still rock. The “Point of Interest” is the drop if water which falls from the hood of the rock of the largest cave, in equal volumes non stop.

 

This cave complex with more than 22,000 sq.ft. of painted surfaces is considered as the world’s largest painted Cave Complex.

 

Return to Colombo.

DAY EXCURSION TO GALLE

Pick up from Beach Hotel (Negombo, Colombo or Bentota) and proceed to Galle- the “Southern Capital” along the coast of the Indian Ocean.

 

En route, visit the Kaluthar Bodhi Temple, unique in its construction where the Shrine Room is the interior of the Stupa and a Turtle Hatchery at Kosgoda to see the efforts that are being made by the local community to preserve this highly endangered reptiles of five speciaes out if a possible 8 regularly visit Sri Lanka, and try releasing a hatchling to the sea.

 

In Galle , visit the Galle Dutch Fortress,a World Heritage Site and a live replica of Dutch occupation of Sri Lanka which commenced in 1658 AD walking along the ramparts admiring the beauty of the famous dutch architectural designs of the original Dutch period buildings including a church, Bastions, majestic Gateway, which is currently a sister city of Velsen in the Netherlands which had\s enjoyed a relationship of more than 25 years.

 

On the return journey, undertake as a Boat Trip up river at Bentota or Kaluthara to Enjoy nature it its best and also visit a Mask Museum.

Leave on a sightseeing tour of Colombo driving through the Commercial area of "Fort" so
named, because both the Portuguese and Dutch had a Fort at this point. Drive past "Pettah", a noisy Oriental bazaar with a hotchpotch of humanity, ancient vehicles, bargains, mosques and temples. Visit a Hindu and Buddhist Temple and the Mosque.

Then, Continuation through the Dutch Church, Cinnamon Gardens, and on to the Independence Square, Bandaranayake Memorial International Conference Hall and National Museum.
